Ghana is ready to revive the ailing rice industry and reduce the ever-increasing importation of rice into the country.
Agriculture minister Ernest Debrah said plans were far advanced to revive the abandoned Aveyime Rice Project, located in the Volta Region of Ghana, with an investment of over US$20 million. He said all the necessary legal and checks on the project had been done and that his ministry was awaiting cabinet approval for work to begin. The project, also known as "Quality Grain," has been lying idle since 2001.
Ghana imports more than US$300 million worth of rice annually, mainly from US, Thailand, China, Vietnam and other Asian countries. This has thrown most Ghanaian rice farmers out of business and ruined the local industry.
