The regional government of Niger state in the federation of Nigeria has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Israel to boost agriculture and rural development. The agreement covers capacity building for agricultural officials and extension workers. It will provide the technological know-how and training on mechanized agriculture for both private and public participants. The Israeli government, under its Center for International Cooperation, will train staff of Maizube Farms in various agricultural skills.
Niger state government would in turn shoulder the responsibilities of providing the trainers and the trainees with accommodation and allowances. State governor Abdulkadir Kure said the state was poised to make agriculture the mainstay of its economy "and the cornerstone of its rural development policy."
He said that Israel had a lot to offer to assist developing countries in enhancing their agricultural development capacities. The governor said that the pact would open more windows of opportunities for other countries in the West African sub-region to chart a course for self sufficiency in food production.
