ZIMBABWE is set to import thousands of tonnes of wheat this year after farmers failed to meet the 2006/07 season production targets due to power outages, lack of equipment and fertilizer.
The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) says farmers produced 150,000 tonnes for the 2006/07 season against a national requirement of 220,000 tonnes.
Meanwhile, the country's Agribank will this winter wheat season sponsor the planting of at least 30, 000 hectares of the crop through a loan scheme. Bank chief executive officer Sam Malaba
said the bank had set a target of 30 000 hectares to fund, up from 18 000 in 2006.
