Farmers in Uganda's Kabale district have been cautioned against the use of a pesticide known as psypermethlen due to its harmful side effects to consumers and the environment. Some farmers use the pesticide to protect their maize and bean harvests.
The inspector of health services for the municipality, Andrew Byabinazi, said the World Health Organisation lists psypermethlen as a dangerous and delicate agricultural pesticide which needs to be handled by specialised and skilled personnel.
Dr. Edward Kazire, a medical doctor, urged the government to ban the importation of the chemical because many people do not know how to apply it and it causes havoc to children and animals.
