FAO to train Malawi on maize storage

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is to train farmers in Malawi on how to make steel maize storage facilities in order to cut on wastage after harvesting.

Foreign affairs minister Joyce Banda said according to this year's crop estimates, the maize surplus is going to double from 500 metric tonnes in 2006 to one million tonnes this year. " FAO is interested to intervene so that our farmers do not lose a lot of food due to poor storage methods," she said. According to her, about 40 percent of food is lost every year in Africa due to poor storage methods.
