Zambia's National Milling Corporation has begun purchasing maize from farmers for strategic reserves during the 2007/8 crop marketing season. NMC MD Peter Cottan said,“We have been in the market in the last one month and we have been purchasing about 300 tonnes per day but are likely to increase this to 400 tonnes.” He said about 90 percent was being bought from small-scale and ten percent from commercial farmers.
“K38, 000 (US$10) is the national floor price for the Food Reserve Agency at their warehouses countrywide, so we are have pegged our price at the same rate less transport costs as we have to transport the maize from the rural areas to the milling plant,” he added.
He said despite the crop marketing season just beginning, most maize bought meets the standard moisture content of between 12 to 12.5 percent moisture content.
