The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Gambomi Goni, said the delay in the supply of the commodity would affect this year’s farming season. “The transporters were federal government appointed, but if we had the chance to transport our allocation that would have been preferable,” he said.
Goni said the decision of the federal authorities to allow only recognised transporters to transport the commodity to prevent diversion was acceptable, but optional arrangements by states should be allowed. This, he said would enable states to transport their allocation to reach farmers on time. Goni said the state would distribute the commodity to the 178 registered farmers groups in all the wards.
He said government would provide 30 per cent subsidy to the farmers on each bag.
