Maize farmers in the South Africa's North West Province have received close to R1 million ($143,000) worth of farm equipment including tractors, a pick up truck and a 10 ton trailer. The implements were officially handed over to the Banogeng Communal Property Association (CPA) by the Regional Land Claims Commissioner, Tumi Seboka, during the celebratory event held at the 214 hectare farm.
The Regional Land Claims Commission spokesperson, Vuyani Nkasayi, said that it was the first time farm implements had been given to land beneficiaries in North West Province. He explained that in the past, the commission would supply beneficiaries with grants instead of the actual farming implements, leaving it up to the claimants to purchase what they wished with the
money. The land, reclaimed in 2003, has maize and sunflower on it.
Ms. Seboka appealed to the claimants to carefully use the implements as a means of sustaining productivity of the land. "They must also use these machines to reduce the burden exacted on the soil by means of old agriculture practices," she said.
Chairman of the Banogeng CPA, Mmutlane Mosiane, expressed his gratitude and described the project as an "astonishing result of perseverance and hard work."
