South Africa to conduct agriculture census

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) will conduct a comprehensive commercial agriculture census from no less than 60,000 farming units in the formal agricultural business sector. The census is aimed at assessing the agricultural sector's contribution to economic growth in the country.

Moses Mnyaka, the census manager, says the information gathered will lay the basis for evaluation of the current status of production, labour, farming, expenditure and farming debt.

"We will be trying to determine the size of the land on which the farmers are farming and the different types of land they are using. We'll be looking at the volume of production. We'll also be looking at the financial information - how much gross income have they generated during the financial year 2007/2008, as well information based on the number of employees," Mnyaka said.
