Energem Resources Inc, a Canadian concern, has announced that it has been granted the right to acquire a further 60,000 hectares of suitable farming land for a jatropha-based biodiesel project in Mozambique. The company applied for more land to add to the 6,000 initial hectares already allocated it for the venture.
Energem acquired a 70% controlling interest in the jatropha based bio-diesel project for a commitment to fund its development up to $5.5 million. The development follows 3 years of research by the project founders into jatropha farming in Mozambique.
The seedling nursery established to date has produced approximately two million seedlings, with which the company will be able to plant approximately 2,000 hectares of commercial crop. Clearing and planting of the first 1,000 hectares has started.
