Kulika Charitable Trust Uganda, an NGO, has set up a sh800 million ($450,000) agricultural training institute at Lutisi. The centre will train farmers in sustainable agriculture and farmer-to-farmer extension work.
Kulika chief executive officer, Elijah Kyamuwendo, said the centre, with residential facilities and a demonstration farm, will train farmers in organic agriculture. “We have trained over 2,000 farmers since 1993, 243 of these as key farmer trainers countrywide,” he said.
Kyamuwendo said organic agriculture training is is tailor-made for specific development needs among communities. “All the activities start with equipping farmers with knowledge and skills,” he said at the 14th graduation ceremony, at which 46 farmers graduated.
The farmers, who were trained in soil and water conservation, crop and livestock husbandry, farm management as well as food and nutrition, will train other farmers countrywide. “The aim is to contribute to sustainable growth and social equity,” said Harriet Ndagire, the assistant community coordinator.
