The decision by Nigeria's Ekiti State government to serve as buyer of last resort of all farm produce from farmers in the State has been described as an effort to propel the farmers to grow more crops in the next farming season.
The State Governor, Segun Oni, said, "Our decision to buy all farm produce in the State is to prevent them from getting frustrated. We realised most of them were complaining of having excess produce they could not sell. If we fail to do this, they will not grow more next year," he said. We are capable of carrying the burden for them. The government has the clout to sell the excess produce. This is in the interest of our farmers."
