Agricultural group Monsanto Co said on October 16 it was considering options around divesting from its South African wheat business, but the review was still in the early stages.
"Over the years the company has made significant investments to maintain the efficiency and output of the former Sensako wheat breeding program," the company said. "Following the sale of its European wheat business in 2004, it has, however, become increasingly difficult to take advantage of operational synergies across other research programmes."
The company was therefore considering options for the wheat business where it would provide greater strategic benefits.
