South Africa on August 24 lowered its 2009/10 maize crop forecast to 13.094 million tonnes from a previous estimate of 13.317 million tonnes due to lower than expected yields, the Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said.
White maize output for the season is now expected to be 7.822 million tonnes, while yellow maize output is forecast at 5.271 million tonnes.
The harvest estimate was lower than market expectations of 13.25 million tonnes, according to a Reuters poll.
The committee left unchanged its estimate for the area cultivated under maize at 2.74 million hectares.
The CEC also said South African wheat farmers are likely to produce 1.695 million tonnes this year, compared with 1.958 million tonnes last season.
