Kenya Seed Company is eyeing the Southern Sudan market, managing director Hosea Sitienei has said. A research team is in the area to find out the varieties suitable for planting there. Most areas in Southern Sudan share the same altitude as Kenya's and are suitable for growing maize.
Sitienei also said the company was looking forward to moving into the Great Lakes region, especially DR Congo and Rwanda, through its subsidiary companies in Uganda and Tanzania.
The company sold 22 million kilogrammes of seed to Kenyan farmers between January and May this year. However, there were 23 million kilogrammes of seed still available. Sitienei said the company was still selling seed to parts of the country where maize is grown twice a year. Such areas include Kisii, Bomet, Trans Mara and some parts of West Pokot.
Last year, the company sold 22.9 million kilogrammes of seed to farmers, with two million kilogrammes being bought by the government for its relief programme.
