A new partnership is to inject 1.5m euros into setting up Uganda's first chrysanthemum flower farm.
Although the country's $27m-worth industry has three chrysanthemum exporters, they export cuttings, not flowers. Chrysanthemums Uganda is a 50-50% joint venture between the Madhvani Group and the Netherlands-based Flower Direct, which will directly sell the flowers abroad.
"This farm is the first chrysanthemum flower growing farm in the country. We decided to venture into chrysanthemum flowers because of Uganda's conducive climate," said Falghni Sarkar, the group's executive director.
He said the country will earn an estimated 1.4m euros per year from 13 hectares. Three hectares have been planted in the first phase, with the flowers due for export to the Netherlands early next year.
This is a key development in an industry which has failed to attract new investors, but needs to double its production to compete favourably with its competitors in neighbouring countries.
