Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State in Nigeria has announced a 15 per cent subsidy on fertiliser for farmers. He announced this when he received the state executive members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN).
He said the gesture was aimed at "creating wealth and jobs" and that it would encourage farmers to take agriculture beyond subsistence levels. He said the government was determined to ensure that the state took the lead in agriculture.
The governor also announced that it would henceforth be a state policy for every member of the Cross River Executive Council to farm at least 10 hectares. Imoke also urged young people to embrace farming and see it as a veritable source of wealth.
He said the state government would enter into agreements with corporate bodies, investors and indigenes for the purpose of large-scale farming.
