Tea farmers in Kenya's Nyeri District have been urged to adopt modern farming techniques to improve on production.
The appeal were made by Central provincial director of agriculture Muindi Muia at Gatuthi Tea factory in the area. The factory ranks third among 54 factories countrywide managed by the Kenya Tea Development Authority.
Muia said the factory had managed a good production of 1.8kg per bush per year. He said the challenge was for the factory to increase production to 3.5kg per bush per year so as to realise the factory capacity of 15 million kilogrammes per year. The factory currently receives 12 million kilogrammes of green tea leaves from farmers.
He said one of the factors that had made the factory realise good production was prompt payment to farmers.The official said the ministry of Agriculture would work closely with the tea factories to train farmers to on modern practices of tea pruning and table formation, among other emerging trends.
