The West African Network of Peasant Organisation and Agricultural Producers (ROPPA) held a one-day consultative workshop on June 22 at Bakau, Gambia. The Gambia is the first Anglo-phone country to join ROPPA.
Established on July 6th 2000 in Cotonou, Benin, ROPPA's objective is to promote and train peasant farmers; restore and create solidarity, foster cooperation and to defend the values of a performing and sustainable peasant agriculture at the service of small farms and agricultural producers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alagie Kebbeh, Director of Nayats, said capacity- building for peasant producers of West Africa is crucial. “We are not against commercial farming. This organisation has joined the peasant farmers around the world as food self-sufficiency is one the targets of the
indigenous farmers,” he noted.
According to him, farmers are marginalised as they are not able to compete with "monsters."
