UK funds rice, soya bean programme in Nigeria

The UK Department for International Development (DFID), is set to invest £15 million for the development of rice and soya beans production in Nigeria.

An official of the programme said it started in 2005 and would until 2011.He said the first phase of the programme was completed between 2005 and 2006 while the second phase was ongoing at various locations across the Country.

"We will do an evaluation of the second phase in October 2007 so as to know the next line of action,'' he said. According to him, "we hope to go beyond 2011 because there are lots of activities going on in the field that will take a longer period to impact on the economy."

The programme had identified processing, production and functional equipment as a way to upgrade the small-scale agricultural mechanisation value chain in the Country.
