Twelve multinational tea factories that had been closed due to post-election violence in Kenya's Nandi District have now resumed operations.
Thousands of tea pluckers who had deserted tea estates to seek refuge in police stations and churches have also returned to their jobs due to the relative calm that has returned to the areas.
The national treasurer of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union, Mr Joshua Oyuga, said on January 9 that plucking of tea in the region had returned to the usual levels.
Mr Oyuga, however, said that the green tea leaves had over-matured in a number of major plantations in the district. The tea industry in the area had by Wednesday made losses estimated at over Sh10 billion in export earnings.
The official appealed to the Red Cross, Government and NGOs to supply relief food to workers in the tea plantations who faced starvation.Daily Nation
